Papyrology

Papyrology is the study of papyrus.

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defined papyrology as: “the study of papyrus manuscripts”.^[1]

Dictionary.com defined papyrology as: “the study of papyrus manuscripts”.^[2]

Collins Dictionary defined it as: “the study and translation of ancient manuscripts written on papyrus”.^[3]

Lexico defined it as: “The branch of study that deals with ancient papyri.”^[4]

Papyrology Etymology

1895-1900 – “papyr(us) + -o- + -logy”^[2]

1895-1900 – “papyr(us) + -o- + -logy”^[3]

1898 – This is allegedly the earliest known use of the word papyrology and it was used with the meaning defined above.^[1]
