Etymonline’s Sources

Etymonline has been one of my go-to references for etymological information. The list of sources provided on their website is ordered alphabetically and is split into two parts. My article here provides a useful reorganization of their two part list into a single list ordered chronologically based on publication date.

This article might also prove helpful with future studies into the history of etymology. The last time I checked their list it contained 82 works. There were the following amount of publications from each century:
C18th: 2
C19th: 26
C20th: 41
C21st: 13

The earliest reference with a word close to etymology in the title is a German publication from 1853 that used the word Etymologisches. The second earliest one is an English publication from 1864 that used the word Etymological. The earliest reference with the word Etymology in the title is an English publication from 1878.
