1959 – Allegedly the earliest known use of the word. Defined as above. From Latin vexillum.[1]

1959 – “”study of flags,” … from Latin vexillum “flag, military ensign, banner” (from velum “a sail, curtain, veil; see veil (n.)) + -ology.”[4]
