Biography of Domenico Fontana (1543-1607)

1543 – He is born in Melide (Today’s Ticino, Switzerland).

1563 – He goes to Rome.

1584 – Pope Sixtus V entrusts him to build the Chapel of the Manger.

1586 – He edits the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano.

1586 – He erects the 327 ton obelisk in the square of St. Peter’s.

1590 – He publishes Della transportatione dell’obelisco Vaticano e delle fabriche di Sisto V.

1594-1600 – He digs an underground channel through Pompeii.

1607 – He dies in Naples.
