Theodor von Oppolzer (1841-1886) is often remembered today for his astronomical and mathematical prowess. There is a crater on the moon named after him.

1841 – He is born in Prague.
1862-1872 – He builds an observatory and makes observations about asteroids and comets.
1863 – He obtains his doctor’s degree.
1865 – He obtains a PhD in medicine from the University of Vienna.
1866 – He begins lecturing on theoretical astronomy at the University of Vienna.
1868 – He leads an expedition to observe a solar eclipse.
1870 – The first volume of his ‘Lehrbuch zur Bahnbestimmung der Kometen und Planeten’ is published.
1870 – His government hires him to determine the length of a degree in Austria.
1873 – He becomes the director of the Austrian Geodetic Survey.
1874 – He is elected an Associate of the Royal Astronomical Society.
1876 – He becomes Professor of Astronomy at the University of Vienna.
1880 – The second volume of his ‘Lehrbuch zur Bahnbestimmung der Kometen und Planeten’ is published.
1881 – His ‘Syzygien-Tafeln fur den Mond’ is published.
1882 – He is elected to the Imperial Academy of Sciences of Vienna.
1883 – He is elected to the American National Academy of Sciences.
1886 – He becomes president of the International Geodetic Association.
1886 – He dies in Vienna.
1887 – His ‘Canon der Finsternisse’ (Canon of Eclipses) is published.
