Epigraphy

Epigraphy is the study of inscriptions.[3] The mid-19th century is when inscriptions first began to be collected systematically.[2, p.204]

“After one has mentioned only the Rosetta stone, the cuneiform tablets, the Behistun inscription, the wax tablets of Pompeii and Dacia, the corpus of Greek and of Latin inscriptions, there would be need of nothing else to overwhelm anyone who doubted the incomparable value of epigraphy to the modern maker of ancient history.”
– Ralph Van Deman Magoffin (1914)[1, p.66]

“The science of epigraphy had been widely practiced and become intellectually reputable from only about 1500.”
– Bauer, Stefan (2020)[6, p.54]
