Chorography

Chorography is the systematic description and mapping of regions or districts.

Chorography Definitions

Samuel Johnson’s 1755 “A Dictionary of the English Language” does not include the word chorography.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defined chorography as a noun meaning:^[1]
“The art or practice of making a map of a particular region, country, or province; or of marking its limits, bounds or position. chorography differs from geography, as the description of a particular country differs from that of the whole earth; and from topography, as the description of a country differs from that of a town, city or district.”

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defined chorography as a noun meaning:^[2]
1 – the art of describing or mapping a region or district
2 – a description or map of a region

Dictionary.com defined it as a noun meaning:^[3]
“a systematic, detailed description and analysis of a region or regions.
also : the physical conformation and features of such a region”

Lexico defined it as a noun meaning:^[4]
“The systematic description and mapping of particular regions.”

Chorography Etymology

“Mid 16th century via Latin from Greek khōrographia, from khōra or khōros ‘region’.”^[4]

1550-1560 – Alleged first known use, “<Latin chōrographia<Greek chōrographía, equivalent to chōro-, combining form of chṓra region + -graphia-graphy”^[3]

1559 – The alleged first known use of the word chorography. It was used to mean definition 1 above.^[2]

c.1637 – Earliest use according to Google Ngram Viewer. It was most popular around the turn of the 19th century.^[5]
