Comparisons of Russian Timelines

This article contains comparisons of Russian timelines from a number of sources on the internet. Russian history is generally agreed upon with only slight variations. This article is a reference article which establishes the popular timeline for Russian history. This popular timeline may be in error and in need of revision.

before 1200s BC – indigenous Slavic tribes – “West Slavs, East Slavs, South Slavs” (3)

1200s BC – Cimmerians settle in Ukraine (3)

700s BC – Cimmerians defeated by Scythians (3)

200 BC – Scythians conquered by Samaritans, this brings Greek and Roman influence to the culture (3)

200 AD – German Visigoths conquer the region (3)

370 – Huns conquer the Goths (3)

by 600 – Slavs have spread through out what is now Russia (8)

800s – Eastern Slavs settle in Russian regions (3)

800 – Slavic people settle in Ukraine (4)

860-1698 – The Kievan Appanage Periods – “The House of Rurik. The period of Kievan Russian Empire, destroyed by the Mongol-Tatars, and the rise of Moscovy…” (1)

862 – Rurik rules the region which later becomes known as the Land of the Rus (3), (4), (8)

862 – Oleg founds Kievan Rus (7)

c.890s – Saints Cyril and Methods develop Cyrillic alphabet using Greek letters (8)

9th century – “Founding of Kievan Rus’, first major East Slavic state”, traditionally attributed to Viking Oleg (5), (6)

988-1240 – Kievan Russia – “Conversion to Christianity, Mongol Invasion” (2)

988 – Grand Prince Vladimir I converts to Christianity (3), (5), (6), (7)

11th century – Kievan Rus is eastern Europe’s chief political and cultural centre

1200-1480 – Mogols conquer and rule Russia (3)

1237-1480 – Mongol-Tatar rule (4), (5), (6), (7)

1547-84 – Grand Prince Ivan IV (the Terrible) is first ruler proclaimed as Tsar of Muscovy (5), (6), (7)

1581 – Cossacks begin conquering Siberia for Russia (5)

1380-1682 – Muscovite Russia – “The Battle of Kulikovo, End of Mongol Rule in 1480, through Theodore” (2)

1613 – Romanov rule begins (5), (6), (7)

1682-1917 – Imperial Russia – “Peter I, through The Great War (1914) and The Russian Revolution (1917)” (2)

1698-1917 – The Imperial Period – “The House of Romanov. Peter’s Westernization of Russia culminated in the destruction of the autocracy by the Socialist Revolution…” (1)

1917-1991 – The Soviet Period – “The Communist Part maintained the Empire as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The USSR fell in 1991 and dissolved into 15 nations.” (1), (2), (3), (4), (5)

1991-Present – The Post-Soviet Period – “…disintegration of the USSR in December … Russia has set out on a new road to democracy and a market economy.” (1)

As you can see, this is a brief and incomplete timeline.

Everything after 1600 is generally agreed upon for the internet timelines of Russian history, because of this, I do not include the citations for each one that makes the claim for dates after 1600. There are also some citations I may have missed. The ones I currently have are accurate. Email me or comment if you have information you would like to see added to this article.
