Who is Thucydides?

Thucydides is commonly believed to have been an 5th century BC Athenian historian and general who authored ‘History of the Peloponnesian War’. This article aims to establish the primary manuscripts which are used for our modern day perception of Thucydides.

As we can see below, all of the manuscripts which we have and use were created after 1000AD. This is some 1400 years after the time in which Thucydides allegedly lived.

Primary manuscripts of the ‘History of the Peloponnesian War’;

1 – (A) – Paris suppl. graecus 255 (once the ‘Cisalpinus’ or ‘Italicus’) – written in the 11th-12th century

2 – (B) – Vatican gr. 126 – w. 11th c.

3 – (C) – Florence, Laurentian 69, 2. – w. 11th c.

4 – (E) – Heidelberg library, Palatinus 252. – w. 11th c.

5 – (F) – Munich, Augustanus 430. – w. 11th c.

6 – (G) – Munich gr. 228 – w. 13th c.

7 – (M) – British Library 11727. – w. 11th c.

His text was first printed in Venice in 1502 by Aldus. The scholia were printed a year later.
