The study of Semitic languages is known as Semitic studies, or Semitology. This is an academic discipline which focuses on the studies of Semitic languages, literatures, and histories, of Semitic-speaking peoples. One who studies this may be referred to as a Semiticist, or a Semitist. It includes Assyriology, Hebraist, and Syriacist studies. It also includes comparative studies of Semitic languages which focus on reconstructing Proto-Semitic.
As we can see, the study becomes serious around the end of the 1700s. Further significant strides were taken in the late 1800s and throughout the 1900s.
