Biography of Lucius Cassius Dio

Lucius Cassius Dio (c.155-c.235) is also known as Cassius Dio, Dio Cassius, Dione Cassius. He wrote 80 volumes of history on ancient Rome over the span of 22 years. He is a source for the 203 eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

193 – He is named Pretorius.

c.195 – He settles in Capua to write his history.

c.195-205 – He is assembling materials for his history.

216 – He joins Caracalla on a campaign to Armenia.

222-225(?) – He is proconsul of Africa.

225-228 – He is proconsul of Dalmatia and Upper Pannonia.

229 – He is name consul again.

c. 235 – He dies in Nicaea, Bithynia.
