Biography of Antonio Agustin

This article contains a concise biographical timeline for Antonio Agustin y Albanell (1516–1586). Today, he is remembered as the first canon law historian.

1516 – He is born in Zaragoza, Spain.

1544 – He is nomination as auditor of the Sacra Rota Romana.

1554/55 – He becomes a papal nuncio.

1556 – He becomes Bishop of Alife.

1561-1563 – He participates in the Council of Trent.

1571-1576 – He is Bishop of Lleida.

1576 – He is named Archbishop of Tarragona. He publishes Antiquae Collectionis Decretalium.

1587 – He publishes De Emendatione Gratiani dialogorum libri duo and Epitome iuris pontificii veteris.

1586 – He dies.

1611 – His De quibusdam veteris canonum ecclesiasticorum collectoribus iudicium ac censura is published posthumously.
