Definitions

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defined lexicology as:[1]
“The science of words; that branch of learning which treats of the proper signification and just application of words.”

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defined lexicology as:[2]
“a branch of linguistics concerned with the signification and application of words”

Dictionary.com defined it as:[3]
“the study of the formation, meaning, and use of words and of idiomatic combinations of words.”

Lexico defined it as:[4]
“The study of the form, meaning, and behaviour of words.”

Etymology

c.1828 – Earliest known use, defined as above.[2]
“French lexicologie, from lexico- (from Late Greek lexiko-, from lexikon) + -logie -logy”

“First recorded in 1820–30; lexic(on) + -o- + -logy”[3]

1828 – “”the study of words,” including form, history, and sense, … from lexico- + -logy.”[5]
